Chris Engelien Bow Buck

Congrats to Central Wisconsin Service Technician Chris Engelien for adding his name to the growing list of successful hunters this past weekend. We’ll skip the rest of my usual bullshit and let Chris tell the story:

“My family has land in central Trempleau County. Went over for the day on Sunday. Sat in the morning and had 8 different bucks ranging in size come through just after day break. No shots available on any of the bigger bucks. Went back to the cabin to finish studying for my journeyman final exam that was on 11-7-22. Went back out for the night and had 17 mph winds from the west. Wasn’t sure where to sit and decided to sit in a valley that runs west to east and the wind was really whipping through the valley to the point of that I was getting nervous 25′ in a tree. 3 pm I see a small doe fawn 100 yards from me and I can not hear a thing due to the wind. I ended up spotting this buck 50 yards behind me staring at the fawn for 20 minutes he didn’t move and then bedded down, so I just kinda kept an eye on where he was bedding in some thick brush. 10 minutes later I see a mature doe is 5 yards from where he is bedding and now I’m thinking I missed when he got up, but he actually stayed bedded down until a little fork came strolling in and then he got up and was snort wheezing at him and pushing him away from the doe. This went back and forth for another 20 minutes. Finally he came in at 30 yards and I let one fly. Looked like a good hit to me and he took off over up the hill behind me. The mature doe stayed where she was and then the fork came in to chase her. When this happened all of a sudden the buck I just hit is 15 yards under my stand grunting at the fork, so I stick it with another arrow and looks good again. He takes off over the hill. I get down to try and find my arrows and I couldn’t find either of them. I went back to the cabin to get a bigger spot light and start my track and it wasn’t looking good. Very small spots of blood for 400 yards on my hand and knees tracking him and then I find the back half of my arrow, but once that fell out the blood trail was good.  I found him dead at 450 yards. The first arrow ended up being father back and than I thought and hit the liver and out the back, but the hole got plugged with fat. The second arrow hit a lung but I don’t believe the Rage opened because the exit hole was only a 1″. The second arrow hit one lung. After 6 years of bow hunting with a few misses and a few busts I finally got my first deer and man was it an experience and a roller coaster of emotions.”

Awesome success story, Chris. Thanks for sharing it with us, and congrats again on a hard-earned buck!
