John Buresh’s (Project Executive at our Wrightstown office) son’s Grant and Drew laid the hammer down on some beautiful bucks for the youth hunt! Blew is a little right up John sent to us!
Saturday evening of the youth hunt my 12-year-old son Grant and I were sitting in a blind when four bucks came out onto the back of the food plot around 6:20. There is some tall grass that only allowed us to see the tops of their backs and heads when they raised them. I have never had to select a buck, in my experience there is usually one and the only decision is if it is a shooter or not. Only one of the bucks would put it head up at a time, so it was challenging to pick out the deer with the largest rack. We ruled out two of the bucks easily but struggled deciding on the last two. We could tell the eight pointer had a tall rack for his size but there was a 9 pointer that was a little wider with shorter tines and the 9th point was a small sticker tine. I try to stay very calm when hunting with young people, but was starting to get anxious that we were taking too much time, and something would spook the deer off. Then the 8-pointer started to expose himself for a good shot so Grant decided he was the one. Grant shot him through both front shoulders at 75 yards with the 270 and dropped him in his tracks.
My 13-year-old son Drew was hunting nearby with my nephew when Grant shot his buck, I received the text almost instantly “was that you?” I replied to his text that Grant got one and I told him there was bucks in the area but he was too excited and came right over. It was a proud dad moment seeing Drew excitement on his brother’s success and watching him congratulate Grant on the nice buck. Shortly after Grant and I were heading back to start processing the deer Grant started telling me that he wished Drew could have gotten that deer because he had got one last year and Drew didn’t. As nice as it was to hear Grants concern for his brother, I told him to enjoy getting such a nice buck and that Drews time would come.
Then Sunday evening came, Drew was sitting in the same blind that proved successful the day before with a very good family friend. They sent me some texts telling me they weren’t getting any action, then I got a text saying “I think we just got the big guy! Big big big” The big guy turned out to be an awesome 11 pointer with a split tine. With all their excitement, I didn’t get the full story until later that evening. Due to lack of action, they let out a long deep grunt on the grunt call. Shortly after the “Big Guy” came charging out of the trees, heading straight to the blind. At about 40 yards he stopped fast and stared at the blind. Figuring the buck realized something was up and worried he would run off, they decided they better shoot and shot him in the chest while he was facing them head on. The bullet from my wife’s 7mm08 landed solidly and “the Big Guy” went 40 yards and expired.
Drew’s time had come – On the ride to meet up with Drew, Grant changed his tune from the evening before when he was wishing his brother success. He clearly explained that he wished his older brother would have gotten his 8 pointer or a smaller buck. Not an 11 pointer!
Both boys got great bucks and they will certainly remember this weekend for the rest of their lives.
To add to the adventure – Drew got to meet Marty Hock!
Congrats to the Buresh family on a very successful youth hunt! Maybe Drew and Grant can show dad some pointers on how to bag a big buck!
