Congrats to Dave Weiss on his doe taken with his flintlock muzzleloader over the 9 day gun season in Eau Claire County! Dave is a Plumbing Service Tech out of our Altoona location.
“A short back story. Being bored with shooting deer with a modern rifle I decided to order a Jim Chambers flintlock kit and built it myself this last winter. I’ve never owned a muzzle loader. Discovering real black powder is hard to find, I learned to make my own with the help of some YouTube stars. So opening day I loaded the .58 cal with home made black powder and set out for some excitement. I’ve only practiced at 75 yards. I had deer at 100 but ethics kept me from pulling the trigger. The last night of the season I had 2 does and 2 fawns within range but side by side. Holding the 9lb gun for about five minutes until I could get a chance. Worrying about the week old charge, a flash in the pan or a hang fire, (that dreaded flinch lock delay) I let it go. Went off as it should. She went about 70 yards. That patched lead round ball didn’t leave a blood trail even though it was a double lung shot. Thank you guys for all your hard work and entertainment.”
Pretty cool story Dave! Pretty sure you’re the first person I know that got a deer utilizing a flintlock muzzle loader! Congrats on your success and hope to hear more about your future hunts!
