Just so everyone knows, I have a group of people watch me draw the names randomly every week so there are no shenanigans! Good luck this weekend in the woods and if you’re sighting in your firearms, below are some guidelines:

The first rule of firearm safety is always treat every firearm as if it is loaded. This means never assuming a gun is unloaded, even if you believe it to be so, and always treating it with the same caution. This principle is foundational, and when combined with the other primary rules (keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger, and be sure of your target and what is beyond it), helps prevent accidents.

  • Always treat every firearm as if it is loaded. This is the most crucial rule because it prevents complacency. Regardless of who used the firearm last or what you believe about it, treat it as if it is ready to fire.
  • Always point the muzzle in a safe direction. This is the second most important rule. A safe direction is one where a bullet cannot cause injury or damage, even if an accidental discharge occurs.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger. A firearm should only be fired when you have a clear target and have made the conscious decision to shoot.
  • Be sure of your target and what is beyond it. Before firing, you must be absolutely certain of your target and the area beyond it to avoid hitting unintended objects or people.
