Instead of a Tuesday update today, I simply have this: The 2021 archery season is quickly coming to an end, which means the TG Buck Pool is ending as well. If you are one of the 15 or so people who have shot a buck this year and haven’t had it scored yet, please contact one of these three people by this Sunday, January 9, and arrange to have it done.
I realize that many of you shot bucks that will not place and therefore do not care to go to the trouble of getting your deer scored. However, this pool pays out to the top three bucks, and there are some deer out there with top three potential that have yet to be scored. Our current 3rd place buck scored 118 1/8″. Apologies to Mitch Dequaine, but if you think your buck will score higher than this it’s in your best interest to contact Jeff, Justin, or Mike and get it measured. It’s the final week of Archery Season in Wisconsin, which means it’s also the final week of the TG Buck Pool. There are several prizes still up for grabs, so we’re going to be posting raffle winners every day this week. Welcome back, everyone. I hope you all had a great holiday season. We have one week left in the buck pool. We got a pleasant surprise over Christmas week when Jeff Darnell sent us pics of the buck he harvested during firearms season in November. Jeff is a Local 18 Sheet Metal worker currently on the LP Maine project. I’ll let Jeff tell the story himself:
“Shot the afternoon of November 23rd in the Wisconsin Rapids area. Was a slow evening when I caught movement of legs coming out of the brush about 125 yds away. After seeing his head, I knew he was big, but didn’t realize how big until walking up on him after I shot. Gave me a 60 yard shot and died 35 yards in front of me. Dressed out at 180 lbs.”
To my knowledge, this buck has not been scored yet, but it looks like it could be a contender for Top 3. I’ll keep you posted when I get more info. Congrats on the great buck, Jeff!
No new deer activity in the past week, but Jeff was able to put the tape on a few more racks. We have a few new scores in the standings, but the Top 3 remain the same. It’s still Mike, Shawn, and Mitch in the money. Jake Harrison’s buck came within one inch of Mitch Dequaine, but he’ll have to settle for 4th place. You can see the updated standings below.

After last week’s insanity that melted all of our snow then blew down all of the Christmas decorations it’s nice to see a return to normal this week. Looks like we even have some potential snow coming this weekend that could help our late season hunters with spotting and tracking. Deer Cast is saying that if you’re going to hunt this week in the Green Bay area it better be within the next 24 hours. After Wednesday it’s predicting OK to poor deer movement for the next week. Not sure how many of you follow Deer Cast, but they have clever titles for the different phases of deer hunting. To be honest, this is the first year I’ve really followed it past late-November because, sadly, I’m not a bow hunter and I stop paying attention the Monday after Thanksgiving. Thursday is what they consider Phase 13 and they call it “The Grand Finale.” Maybe we’ll have a grand finale in the pool as well.
This Friday’s Raffle
Because of the holiday this weekend we will not be having our usual Friday raffle. However, look out after Christmas for a flurry of late-season winners. The last prizes consist of a Victaulic prize package, Uponor $200 gift card to target, Blackstone griddle/grill from HSA, 55″ shooting stick, Buddy Heater, Ground Blind, Laser Ranger Finder, and a Vortex Rifle scope.

Not surprisingly, it’s been a few weeks since we’ve added a buck to the pool. The one change we saw was that Jeff was able to score TJ Agamaite’s buck. He measured in at 115 4/8″ which is good enough to put him in 4th place in the standings. Congrats again on another quality buck, TJ!

I hope you didn’t pack up your warm weather camo just yet because tomorrow looks to be a lovely anomaly. If you want to hearken back to the days of September and early-October tomorrow is the day to be in your stand. Not surprisingly, according to Deer Cast you’d be wasting your time in your stand tomorrow as deer movement is supposed to be bad, but the weather could make it a comfortable sit. Friday, Saturday, and Tuesday all look like good days for deer movement in the coming week in the Green Bay area. If you’re still putting in time hunting the monster that’s still out there it could be a good weekend.

The flow of deer hunting information has slowed to a trickle as December has progressed. The buzz around the office has turned to other topics now that the majority of people have packed up their hunting gear and started focusing on holidays, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and other winter activities.
I posted the trail cam pic at the top of this page as a reminder that your trophy might still be out there. When I saw this pic come across three days ago I was ready to pick up the crossbow and drive four hours to the hunting property to find him. When it comes to deer hunting I believe effort and diligence are rewarded. If you’re still putting in time in your tree stand I salute you and hope that your #1 target pays you a visit in the coming days.
Sadly there’s little else to report on this week. The Tuesday Update is lighter than usual. Keep your eyes open in the near future for more raffle prizes as the holidays approach. The Week Ahead
It’s been crazy cold the past two days. It could be up to 50 degrees by the middle of next week. We’re expecting snow Thursday through Saturday. Welcome to Wisconsin in December. According to DeerCast this all adds up to weather that’s not conducive to deer movement, ranging from OK to bad with the exception of Wednesday morning, which is likely right now if you’re reading this after it was posted. If you don’t have your buck yet I hope this means you’re in your stand reading this.

As mentioned above, we did have a situation that will have a rules change. I’ll explain the story as best I can, and then Jeff can correct me when I inevitably screw it up. One of our participants had already submitted a deer to the pool for gun and bow hunting. A situation came up with this individual as most of us have trail cameras and his just so happened to have a giant monster buck coming in during daylight. The question came up if he ended up getting this buck utilizing the group or “party” hunting rule, would it count in the pool? Group hunting or party hunting, as you are likely aware, is the act of shooting a deer for someone else in your group that hasn’t filled their tag yet. This is perfectly legal during firearm season but not legal during bow season as long as you are in shouting distance of the individual that would be tagging your deer.
Jeff was in a predicament so he asked around to several of the other participants and the majority of those he spoke to believe that this buck should not count as it is not the pool participant’s tag that was used for the buck. While it is not officially in the rules in for the 2021 pool, it will be added in 2022. Please keep that in mind moving forward: You are able to enter multiple bucks in the pool if you took them during firearm or bow season, or if you took them out of state. However, in order for the buck to be eligible it needs to be your tag. Thank you to the individual for bringing up a great question and I’m sure it won’t be the last.
On a different topic, I’m sure many of you are looking ahead to hunting in 2022 already. I’m also sure many of you are subscribed to e-mail notifications from the Wisconsin DNR. If you are not, we received a reminder today that 2022 black bear and spring turkey harvest applications are due by 11:59 PM on December 10. That’s only a few days away for you procrastinating bear and turkey hunters. If you don’t know where to apply, I got you. Here’s your link.
Damn it. It’s 12:02 AM. This Tuesday Update is officially a Wednesday Update. Hopefully nobody noticed. I got sidetracked tonight watching my nephew play basketball and lost track of time.
