Wisconsin Rapids Account Manager Wayne Glen joined the Outside TG Podcast this week to discuss High School Mountain Biking. Wayne’s son, Levi, races for the SPASH team and Wayne is one of the coaches. The SPASH team competed in six events this year across the state, culminating in last weekend’s State Championship in Waterloo where SPASH took 3rd place in Division 1. The SPASH team finished the six-race series in 2nd place overall in the state in Division 1. Levi Glen finished the series in 3rd place overall in the state in Division 1 JV III.

On the podcast Wayne discussed how he and Levi got involved in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Cycling League, and how high school mountain biking is more than just racing, with teams and families spending weekends at campgrounds throughout late-summer and early-fall.

I have joked about being a modern day Griswold as we are a family of road trips!  My wife didn’t travel a lot growing up and we are pushing to change that with our family.  During the pandemic, we jumped on making the best and started making road trips to help our kids have experiences.  We are just getting started and are in year number 4 of planning road trips.  We also have a motive to travel as I was given a mothers day gift idea to get my wife a picture frame that you put pictures in of the states you visit (thank you Katye Balza for the idea).  We actively plan trips to help add pictures of our adventures to create memories and experiences.  We have some fun stories, great memories and are establishing some fun traditions along with way!

So far we have Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Michigan, Minnesota, California, and Washington checked off our list.

Christopher Howald shared his recent fishing trip he took in Colorado on the Gunnison River. He is holding a beautiful 22″ Rainbow Trout that he caught while fly fishing. Dan Ebert shared his recent trip he took with his family to Alaska. By the looks of the pictures, it looks like they were able to do quite a few adventures while they were there! Dan is currently a Safety Advocate working out of the De Pere location. Also in the pics below is his daughter Lauren (taking the selfies), who served as a Temporary Admin Assistant at our De Pere location.

Kelly Wehausen works in De Pere as a Receptionist, the smiling face of Tweet/Garot. Thank you for submitting and you will be entered into monthly drawing!

Kelly Wehausen and her puppy Watson are paddle boarding on Chicaugon Lake. Her family spends a lot of time at the cottage located in the Upper Peninsula between Crystal Falls and Iron River, Michigan. The lake is about 1,100 acres and includes a golf course and campground. The cottage on Chicaugon Lake is where her entire family gathers during all seasons. Some of their favorite hobbies include boating/waterskiing, fishing, side by side trail riding, hunting and downhill skiing. Kelly and her sister and brother grew up spending time in the U.P. with family and friends, and now feel lucky to be able to share the beautiful area with their spouses and kids.

Todd Poeschel, Pipefitter Foreman from the Altoona location, sent in his love for farming, setting up trail cameras, and spending his time with his family at the cabin. Greetings from buffalo and Pepin county Wisconsin.  The corn is all tasseled, we have flown on fungicide on beans, and the 3rd crop hay is made. Deer are putting on some good antlers this year. I’ve only had cameras out for about a week or so. Weekends at the cabin in Birchwood are producing lots of fish also.

This is a submission for Outside TG on my phenomenal fishing trip to Northern Ontario, Canada. A group of 6 of us (one of them being Kayte Balza’s husband) flew up to Big Hook Wilderness Camps on Central Lake for a week of off grid fishing. To say this experience was outstanding would be an understatement. We drove to Red Lake, Ontario and then from there boarded a Sea Plane and flew 1 hour and 45 minutes north aboard a Cessna 208 Caravan on floats (able to land directly on the lake). There were vast views of the Canadian wilderness from 6,000 feet above the ground but also put into perspective how remote some of these locations really are. The fishing on Central Lake was an experience like I have never experienced before. The major species we fished were Northern Pike, Walleye, Sauger, and Perch and there wasn’t a shortage of any species. Central Lake is classified as a “trophy lake” so Walleye’s that were over 18” in length had to be caught and released and Northern Pike over 27” needed to be released as well. The weather was just as vast as the Canadian wilderness as temps ranged from 40 degrees and rainy to 90 degrees and sunny within the week we were there. We stayed in a cabin that had the bare necessities like a sink and a shower that pumped water directly from the lake along with propane and wood fired stoves. The largest Northern the team was able to land in the boat was 39.5” and the largest Walleye was 26”. It was a very humbling experience being completely off grid and if there was an event the only means of transportation is a sea plane to the nearest village which was 50 miles away. I will definitely be going back to Big Hook!

Ellen Richmond was nice enough to share with us the beautiful day with her Dad and brother recently in Door County. By the looks of it, there isn’t a shortage of cherries this year! Thank you for sharing! Ellen is a Project Coordinator from our Altoona location.

My brother and I took my Dad cherry picking in the Sturgeon Bay area last Thursday.   It was very good picking.   We picked 13 pails in about 2-1/2 hours.  The weather was very nice.  When I was growing up, we would normally go pick cherries every other year.  It was kind of a little family day trip for us.   We pit some of them and freeze them for pies or desserts.  We freeze some in sugar water for just eating as sauce.  These cherries are more of a sour cherry.

My husband (who is a bear hunting guide) and I were at our 2^nd home up north in Ashland this past weekend. I went into the woods with him to help him bait, 80 degrees bugs and all. After putting the bait into the hollowed out stump, I sprinkled a scented powder over the top.

Tyler Knauf submitted a great story about a recent fishing vacation with his wife Danielle. I have to say that Tyler could probably be a writer for an outdoor magazine! Thank you for submitting Tyler and congrats on your catch! If you don’t know Tyler, he is a Building Automation System (BAS) Manager working out of the De Pere location.

We were on a family vacation recently during the middle of June up in Vilas county when it happened.  With two little ones at home (4 months and 2 1/2) it’s not often we’ve been able to get out in the boat together (just the two of us).  But one night of the vacation, I convinced my wife Danielle to go out fishing just before dark as we had gotten the kids down for the night earlier than expected.  I had some success catching a few walleyes in a spot the night prior after fishing for a couple of hours with my brother. So, I decided with very limited time before nightfall, we would hit that spot and hope for the best.  The timing of sunset coinciding with a major fishing period had me feeling oddly confident that we might find some success.  We got to our spot with just about 20 minutes of daylight left and it was go-time to get the baits in the water.  We were fishing around an island with crankbaits as I’ve had decent success doing this during the evening and into the night on many northern WI lakes in June.  I had the boat spot locked and were hammering one stretch of shore for 30 minutes or so, which can be a little discouraging without success, but given that it was already completely dark we weren’t feeling like we were going to try a second spot as I didn’t have a ton of confidence anywhere else on the lake at the time.  Feeling like we were going to strike out for the night, I assured Danielle that we were in the peak of the major fishing period, and we still had a chance where we were. 5 minutes later, now fully entrenched in the thick of darkness, Danielle exclaimed that she had something but wasn’t sure what it was as the initial fight was a bit lackluster.  Nonetheless, I scrambled to grab the net with anxious excitement as any fish at this point would make the night feel like a success.  As she got the fish near the boat, I pointed my light to the water to see where it was, and that’s when my heart started racing.  I don’t know if I’ve ever put a net in the water and scooped up a fish any faster, even despite the obvious lack of lighting.  I’ll let the picture tell the rest of the story, but I can only imagine this story will continue to get better as the years go on.  

Jeff and Charlie were joined on the Outside TG Podcast recently by De Pere Account Managers Jason LaBine and Frank Ujazdowski to talk about beekeeping. This is Jason’s first year as a beekeeper and he’s learning from Frank, who has only been doing it for a year, but you wouldn’t know it listening to them.
